Portland Community College's 2nd Annual Independently organized TEDx Event

TEDxPCC 2018
April 2018

Overview

Portland Community College had the opportunity to host the 2nd TEDxPCC at PCC Sylvania Campus.

TEDxPCC 2018's theme was Collective Genius which aimed to spark conversations and ignite positive community actions by bringing together community representatives and showcasing new ideas from local, regional, and national voices across diverse disciplines and backgrounds. It also encouraged the concept of collectively with our knowledge and ideas, we are all geniuses. We explored different abstract concepts of what it means to become a collective genius.

While I was involved in creating graphics and setting up the website, I've also had the opportunity to lead our Graphic Design team as well as be the Marketing Manager for TEDxPCC 2018. This was an amazing experience where I was able to work with the graphic designers in our team and set up meeting plans to meet up, setting up our internal communication, the timeline for each project, and navigating through communicating with the TEDxPCC 2018 planning committee with timelines and different projects that we would take on.

Problem

Our biggest advantage of having 5 graphic designers also became a disadvantage as all graphic designers had different perspectives and opinions on how TEDxPCC 2018's theme should be and how to approach the designs which resulted in intense disagreements. Another obstacle was that we had set a timeline for specific design projects and the TEDxPCC 2018 planning committee would add more projects and would complicate the timelines and expectations.

Solution

This is where I became more involved in making sure that that we set time to meet, planning agendas and minutes, make sure we are on time, managing our deadlines, reporting internally and externally with the planning committee, managing expectations to make sure that we don't burn out the graphic designers in our team and also accessing different strengths and weaknesses while being impartial, this was critical when getting the team assigned to different design projects with good information to work from.

Design

We wanted a design that maintains TEDx's design elements and colors while also making sure that we incorporate the collective genius theme through our various designs.

We ended up deciding on having the brain and connected light illuminating to represent collective geniuses. The bold narrow typeface also represented confidence and unity.

Social Media Post - We wanted to include the branding elements and team information without the loss of layout.

Social Media Countdown - With this one, we wanted to have an overview feel of the event to countdown from, which is where we got the idea of adding blur to the background while having the countdown on top.

Results

Although it required immense organization and time, I've learned a lot about working in a team the different dynamics. Being able to take criticism and destructure the reasoning behind it can strengthen you as a designer, developer, and problem solver.
