Benson Polytechnic High School
June 2016

Overview

The website redesign and logo design was a project that I worked on in my junior year and senior year of high school at Benson Polytechnic High School during my Digital Media Productions Program. It involved a lot of preparation and collaboration between the Web Design team, which was only me at the time, and the other groups, such as the Video team, Photography Team, and Graphic Design team within the Digital Media Productions Major at Benson H.S.

Problem

The existing website had an outdated design and did not have a flexible, scalable codebase. Maintaining and debugging the website became a more significant issue when updating global sections and components that needed to be the same on every page because we had grown to have many pages. A lot of the webmasters had to update every single page manually, which was very time-consuming.

I also had to think about the future web designers maintaining the site, adding new pages, or creating different pages and how it would work. Thinking of how things would connect and work beforehand was very difficult. I was excited about using the latest technologies and had planned to make a mobile version of the site for better accessibility for mobile devices. Unfortunately, our web design class couldn't teach these technologies to other students, so I had to sacrifice a few features and ideas to ensure that the following people wouldn't have a problem setting up the development environment and maintaining the site.

We did not have a consistent brand and logo; this became apparent when creating merchandise during our Tech Show event. It has been four years since a design makeover and codebase change, so I took upon my teacher's offer to work on this vast project.

Solution

  • I worked closely with the Digital Media Production instructors, future Digital Media instructors, several school majors instructors, such as screen printing instructors and student recruitment department, to understand better the use cases and needs of the logo and website.
  • I decided to go with a modular-based layout and a few new technologies and workflow to help with collaboration and maintaining.

Design

I decided to go with a clean, minimalistic design with good white space. I wanted to use a modern negative space; the astronaut helmet is also looking to the upper right, always looking ahead to the future. I also liked this logo/icon to be placed all from caps, helmets, t-shirts, and medallions.

Results

When releasing the website and logo, it was a proven success; during our annual tech show event, we started making stickers, buttons, t-shirts, and much different merchandise utilizing the logo; it was the best selling item that year. The website was also being used more by the students and teachers since before it was just something to check for events. Five years later, the website I built in my senior year of high is still there and looking modern and clean, although the code system I used back then is outdated, using jQuery with the earlier versions of Angular.
